Jeanne Bernard of Paris Black Suede Mandolin Shaped Handbag

About

This delightful figural handbag is shaped like a mandolin. It's covered in a fine, black suede with details and accents in gold plated brass. The “strings” are twisted wires that run through notches in the “bridge”. The neck bends slightly and finishes with a curled head adorned with a tassel. The body has a rounded back that holds a few items, including the original comb that fits in a slot that separates the two small compartments. A braided suede strap with a gold accent forms the handle, and a tab with a snap closure keeps the purse closed. The bag is stamped “Made in France Breveté”. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has in its collection a nearly identical bag with a Lederer label, as well as the stamping that this bag has. And a collector friend of mine has another one with a Jeanne Bernard label. I have not been able to find any connection between Jeanne Bernard and Lederer, but it's quite possible that there was one. I've seen other figural handbag designs also identified as both Jeanne Bernard and Lederer. These figural bags are very delicate and are better suited for display than for carrying. approximate measurements: 4” wide x 2.25” deep x 8.5” high (11.75” high including strap) Please contact us if you have any questions.
