About the Item

Get your fresh fruits here! And your novelty handbags! This 1950's charmer is by Jolles Original of Austria. Jolles has quite a storied history in the world of 20th century handbag design both due to the artistic mastery of their handmade petit point creations in the 1920's and 1930's and the interesting personal history of its founder, Ida Jolles, who was a successful business woman of her time. This fun design was part of a novelty series produced in the 1950's for ladies seeking something different for their wardrobes and they were sold at fine department stores such as Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. The wicker body is a train case style basket shape with two sided opening at the top and double handles. It is charmingly decorated with a red striped awning accented by gold coins and an applique needlepoint vendor selling a cart full of 3-D fruits. The elasticized closure opens to reveal a striped lined interior with zippered side pocket and is roomy enough for modern day tech accessories. Marked with a Jolles Original label at the interior and stamped 'Made in Spain' at the base. CONDITION The handbag is in good and usable structural condition though the decoration shows signs of age and use primarily noticeable on the striped fabric 'awning' as shown in photographs 16 and 17. The applique vendor and the interior appears to be in good condition. The metal hinges have a darkened patina as shown in photograph 9. MEASUREMENTS The body of the handbag measures 12" wide x 10" tall x 7.25" deep (add another 1" to account for the 3-D fruit). Each of the double handle measures 9.5" from end o end providing for a 3.25" drop.
