A unique (one of a kind) evening bag by William de Lillo. The off white leather handbag is set within an ornate gilt metal and stone exterior bag. It is comprised of a large oval faux turquoise (robin's egg blue) glass set in a rhinestone frame. On either side of the turquoise is a faux ruby oval cabochon. The stones are in an ornate openwork Byzantine style gilt metal plaques which are attached by gold rings. The top of the bag has a closure that is a chain with 3 large ruby glass stone each set in a gilt metal flower or sun design that hooks onto the other side to seal the bag. There is a matching gilt metal chain strap with the same plaque that decorates the shoulder. An important piece of wearable art by Willian De Lillo in the 1960's. Inside the bag has a hand sewn tag signed WM. de Lillo. This delightful figural handbag is shaped like a mandolin. It's covered in a fine, black suede with details and accents in gold plated brass. The “strings” are twisted wires that run through notches in the “bridge”. The neck bends slightly and finishes with a curled head adorned with a tassel. The body has a rounded back that holds a few items, including the original comb that fits in a slot that separates the two small compartments. A braided suede strap with a gold accent forms the handle, and a tab with a snap closure keeps the purse closed. The bag is stamped “Made in France Breveté”. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has in its collection a nearly identical bag with a Lederer label, as well as the stamping that this bag has. And a collector friend of mine has another one with a Jeanne Bernard...
