Roberta di Camerino

Label of the Italian fashion designer Giuliana Coen Camerino (1920) who combined her own surname with her daughter Roberta's first name to create a name for the bags she designed in velvet, with green, red, and dark-blue zones, embroidered with gold and heraldic crests, designed during her forced stay in Switzerland to escape the Fascist race laws. Those bags were so popular with international high society that, in the years following WWII, Giuliana had returned to Venice, her birthplace, where an important fashion journalist, Elsa Robiola, published them in Bellezza.

Well before her popularity exploded, triggered by the Florentine runway presentations, the bomb of Made in Italy, the fashion designer, like Emilio Pucci, was already very popular in the United States. Camarino relied upon the remarkable craftsmanship of Venice, especially the craftsmen who made gondolas: for the snaps and the studs, the specialists in brass; for the velvet, the masters of upholstery. Giuliana became "la dogaressa." In 1956, she was given the Oscar of Fashion, the Neiman Marcus Award. She was invited, in January 1952, to the third edition of the runway presentations in Florence, as the designer of the fashion boutique, the fashion designer expanded her creativity to wardrobe, with a quest for simplicity and liveliness in outfits with linear forms, well suited to travel, light in the suitcase. In 1983, she signed an important agreement with the Mitsubishi Corporation: this led to the foundation of Roberta di Camerino Far East and was consolidated in the Japanese market. The year 1995 witnessed a revival on the Italian market with major licensing agreements. In the same year, Roberta di Camerino donated to the Galleria del Costume of Palazzo Pitti outfits and accessories from the 1960s and 1970s.

1999. Roberta di Camerino Brand Diffusion Venice was joined with the Brand Coordinator Lugano. The managing director of both lines was the Ligurian and Tuscan industrialist Francesco Pellati. The owner of the label, the fashion designer Giuliana di Camerino, was counting on the relaunch not only for the apparel sector -- which she was personally overseeing with her grandchild Tessa Zanga -- but also for the debut in two new manufacturing sectors: the sector of jewelry (there was already an agreement with Cozza Gioielli) and the home goods sector, for bath robes, towels, table cloths, and linen, which would be manufactured by Besana.
