18th Century, Virasana Buddha in Bhumisparsa Mudra, Mandalay Period, Burma

$20,800

About

Burma was particularly interested in the performances of Buddha and his disciples. The Master, is represented here in the attitude of "Take of the Earth to witness" or "Bhumisparsamudra". Sitting in "virasana", his right leg bent over the other and his left palm hand-turned towards the sky, placed on the right ankle, he makes the gesture of touching the ground with the fingertips of his right hand. This position, very widely illustrated in the statuary of Southeast Asia, evokes an important episode in the life of the Blessed One. Indeed, strong of his many merits acquired during his previous lives, the Master remains unshakeable against the assaults of the Mâra (the Demon). To testify of his victory and the power of meditation on the temptations of illusion, he then touches the earth from which arises the goddess Bhumi, who pays homage to him. He is dressed in the traditional monastic dress, made of a large draped piece: the open and spread sides of the coat highlight the delicate body pattern, accentuated by the movement of the soft and undulating folds of the fabric. The golden head-dress, delimited on the forehead by a thin bandeau encrusted with precious stones, is made of rows of small loops rising to the top of the "usniça", seat of the supra-mundane wisdom, symbol of the union between the Earth and the Sky. This Buddha is remarkable for the care given to its workmanship and harmony in its proportions. It is also exceptional because of the rarity of its origin and the profound sense of reverence that emanates from it.
