19th Century, Mandalay, a Set of Antique Complete Burmese Manuscript 'Kammavaca'

About the Item

Rare and complete set Burmese manuscript (KAMMAVACA) made from thick cloth coated with gold and lacquer in nice condition. It was written in the Pali language using Burmese script. The square letters were written in thick and black cinnabar lacquer. This set has 16 leaves and 2 wooden covers made from teak wood. Each leave was inscribed on both sides with illustrations of deity figures from Hindu-Buddhist mythology on some leaves. There are small holes on every leaf to put a string to bind them together. Kammavaca is the most sacred of Burmese religious texts, was used for monastic ritual, most commonly for ordination. It contains rules of monastic service and includes scripts (khandaka) on ordination, admonitions to the newly ordained monk. It is now very difficult to find a complete set and very good condition like this. Age: Burma, Mandalay Period, 19th Century Size: Length 59.6 C.M. / Width 15 C.M. / Thickness 4 C.M.     A gorgeous Burmese carved and gold leafed teakwood stand and cover for a kammavaca manuscript, late 18th or early 19th century, Burma. The manuscript chest is heavily rococo influenced, speaking to the French presence in the region at the time. The carved teak stand is formed as a raised platform set upon four large scrolling acanthus leaf feet, with carved flour-de-lis to the apron. The cover for the stand is also carved from teak, and features a series of rectangular cartouches, each set with a red foil backed glass "gem", surrounded by shell inlay, and embellished with green and silver foil backed glass sequins.
