Early 19th Century, Bento Box with Arabesque and Cherry Blossom Design, Japan

$1,900

About

It is found that Japanese tradition of preparing packed meal can be traced back as early as 12th century. At first, the prepared convenient meal was for those who worked outside, for instance, fishermen. During Edo period, bento had turned to a status habit for travellers. In addition, it became a must-have item for outdoors social excursions, such as tea party. Due to the large demand from noble class, the concept of decorative lacquer bento box has evolved. Like many other sprinkled design, lacquer was first applied on the surface of bento box to form the patterns, then metal power was sprinkled over to make the them visible. This bento box consists of five layers. Each layers was decorated with repetitive geometric or flower patterns. It is noted that repetitive patterns received its popularity in the Edo period due to the technological advance on Japanese textile. One of the layer adopted the pattern of cherry blossom, one of the most famous flowers in Japan with the unique little v-shaped cut at the end of petals, used to symbolise a time of renewal. The other two layers have the patterns of flowers accompanying spiral designs and vines come to symbolise luck, eternity and prosperity. This is an excellent piece demonstrates the tradition of geometrical and floral patterns that have been widely utilised in Japanese art, which make the bento box more than a design for ordinary usage but also a visual enjoyment for its collector.
