Tang Dynasty Terracotta Camel Sculpture, 1st Century

About the Item

A Chinese Terracotta camel from the Tang Dynasty. To the people of China’s Tang dynasty (618-907), very few animals were as useful and revered as the horse and the camel. The Bactrian camel was used to haul trade goods along the silk roads leading out of China across the western regions into Central Asia and beyond. Sculptures of horses and camels were placed in chambers within the tombs of the wealthy and powerful, to accompany them in the afterlife. This camel is made from light-colored earthenware clays, partly using molds with added sections that were joined together. The inside is often hollow or had holes to prevent unwanted distortion of the object when fired in the kiln.
