10/11C Pot-Bellied Vishnu Buff Sandstone Sculpture

About the Item

PRESENTING a STUNNING piece of Southeast Asian Antiquity, namely, a 10/11C Pot-Bellied Vishnu Buff Sandstone Sculpture from Central India. This piece has impeccable Provenance! Sotheby’s operate a twice yearly auction of Southeast Asian Art & Antiquities in New York in the months of March and September. It was purchased by a Private Dallas Collector at Sotheby’s New York Auction on 24th March 2004. Sale Number 7975, Lot No. 23. The sculpture was described as: “Visnu Buff sandstone Central India. Vishnu in his pot-bellied, dwarf incarnation, wearing an elaborate beaded waistband, a sacred thread and necklace, the shrivatsa in relief on his chest, his head with tightly curled hair surrounded by a fragmentary lotus halo. Height 14 in (35.6 cm) 10th/11th Century. Property of a European Collector.” It carried an Auction estimate of USD 5,000 to USD 7,000 and Sold for USD 6,000 (not including Buyers Premium). Allowing for inflation alone this would be over $10,000 in today’s value. As an added bonus and proof of authenticity the carving still retains it’s original Sotheby’s Lot No. Label (No. 23). It has substantially increased in value over the years as a RARE piece from a prestigious Collection and a RARE piece of Asian antiquity. Provenance: See above. From a Dallas Private Collection. Condition: Very good original condition. Dimensions: On Plinth it is 17 inches tall. Sculpture itself is 14.5 inches Tall, 6.5 inches wide and 5.5 inches deep. Wooden plinth is 2.5 inches tall, 4.5 inches deep, 5.5 inches wide.

Christie’s operate a twice yearly auction of Southeast Asian Art & Antiquities in New York in the months of March and September. The sculpture was described as “Property of a European Estate. A Double-sided Red Sandstone Fragment of a Woman. India, Uttar Pradesh, Mathura, Circa 2nd Century.” “Both sides similarly depicting the lower body with a flared sash at left and remains of chained belt: marked with an accession number 1931 on reverse. 8 in (29.2 cm.) high” Provenance: Collection of Prince and Princess Aschwin zur Lippe-Biesterfeld, acquired on 1958?.     Extremely rare Chinese pottery caparisoned horse from the Northern Qi region. A beautiful large sculptural piece, created in China during the Northern Qi dynasty period, between the 549 and 577 AD. This horse statue is extremely finely modeled of earthenware pottery, standing in a very elegant and majestic position striding on a trapezoidal shaped base. The animal has a gracefully arched neck to the left looking forward and its extremely well modeled. The head is adorned with a large detailed tassels of plumes and the body is embellished with a beautiful saddle and intricate harnesses. The trapping around the chest and rump is adorned with elaborated tassels and the straps are accented with multiples florets and bosses in high relief. Decorated with dotted and circles patterns.
