Bench in the Style of Emilio Lancia
About the Item
Emilio Lancia (1890 - 1973) was an Italian architect, among the leading exponents of the "Novecento" style.
Born in Milan to a wealthy family, he attended the Regio Liceo - Ginnasio Alessandro Manzoni and later the course in Architecture at the Regio Istituto Tecnico Superiore, where he met Giuseppe de Finetti.
At the outbreak of World War I he attended the Military Academy in Turin together with Gio Ponti, and during the war phases he met Giovanni Muzio and Mino Fiocchi; at the end of the conflict he finished his studies and, after a period of apprenticeship at Luca Beltrami's studio, opened a studio in Via Sant'Orsola with de Finetti and Muzio.
After some youthful projects, which received considerable praise, he began to collaborate continuously with Gio Ponti, creating some projects in the new style known as "Novecento," which harkened back to the Lombard neoclassical tradition. This was followed by a gradual evolution toward Rationalism, accepted, however, only in some of its formal aspects, which led to a final break with Ponti.
Lancia continued his career with several prestigious projects, in which he sought to reconcile rational elements with traditional and monumental ones, aiming for an enduring character of architecture.
He died in 1973 in Besozzo.
