Early 18th Century Chinese Red Lacquer Cabinet

About

Traces of the original gilt floral painting remain on the doors of this early 18th century red-lacquered chest from China's Shanxi province. Countless coats of hand-applied red lacquer give the chest its inimitable rich finish. Like many cabinets from the era, the chest sits up on a platform designed to protect the cabinet and its contents from moisture and allow air to circulate beneath.
