English Chinoiserie Pagoda Shaped Giltwood and Black Lacquered Vitrine
About the Item
A quite unusual 19th century English, 18th century style, chinoiserie pagoda shaped giltwood and black lacquered vitrine/display cabinet/showcase. Beautifully hand carved, this gorgeous vitrine exemplifies the true essence of the 18th century English chinoiserie taste. The wood grains are beautiful, with interchanging rich brown and light brown striations. Found atop the vitrine is a beautiful pagoda hand carved and giltwood finial with gilt bells found hanging from atop the sides. On the front glass panel are overlaid giltwood pagoda-form inserts. Found throughout the vitrine are beautifully raised lacquered plaques depicting gilt chinoiserie men, women, cranes, lakes, trees and homes. The beautifully hand painted gilt cranes symbolize happiness and eternal youth. Underneath the vitrine is four fretwork stretchers, leading to a beautifully gilt chinoiserie finial. The Condition for the piece is great considering the age of this piece, some rubbing and loss to the gilding as expected.
