About
Prior to the 10th century, Chinese society eschewed raised seats in favor of mats. The rising popularity of chairs and other forms of elevated seating led craftsmen to adapt traditional cabinetry and architecture techniques to the human body. In the case of these Yuanyi, or round chairs, the flowing crestrail is a direct descendant of the simple armrests that had traditionally supported individuals on mats in their homes.
Crafted with mortise-and-tenon joinery, this pair features several elegant details that set them apart from other 19th-century examples. The curved crestrail is supported by a bent backsplat carved with a ruyi-form medallion and four straight posts topped with simply carved spandrels. The posts flow continuously into four round legs linked by a footrest and three straight stretchers. Humpback stretchers form the apron, just beneath the floating panel seat. Beautifully worn from a century of use, this traditional chairs add timeless form and rich texture to any interior.
