About the Item

In 1763 the artist Francis Smith accompanied Frederick Calvert, 6th Baron Baltimore (1731 - 1771, named in inscription) to the Levant (Ottoman Empire) where he painted and drew the people he saw. From that came a series of engravings which were exhibited in London 1768-73, which were subsequently printed and more-widely distributed. This set of 14 represents some of the more interesting of the characters Smith drew. All are marked "Engraved from the Collection of the R. Hon.ble Lord Baltimore. Published according to Act of Parliament [date]." Most are dated July 25, 1768, with a few over the ensuing year up to Mar. 2, 1769 as the latest. Signed by Francis Smith as "printer" and various others as engravers (sculptors). The engravings were expertly framed in London about 20 years ago. The set was expertly framed about 20 years ago in London. As seen in the photo assemblage above, characters depicted are: Top row: 1) A Polish Girl of Srvanietz, A frontier which seperates the Turkish Dominions from Poland; 2) Boustangi, Gardener of the Seraglio; 3) Reis Effendi, Principal Secretary of State; 2nd row: 1) A Grecian Woman; 2) The Grand Vizir; 3) Chiaus Bashi, Chamberlain of the Ottoman Court. 4) Arshi, Cook of the Seraglio; 3rd row: 1) Kislar Aga, Chief of the Black Eunuchs, and first Keeper of the Serraglio; 2) Aga, A Turkish Gentleman; 3) A Turkish Dancer, Dancing before her Master; 4) Arshi Usta, Officer & Cook of the Tanissaries; Bottom row: 1) A Polander in the Dress of the Court; 2) Mufti, Chief of the Mahemetan Church; and 3) A Greek Princess of Vallachia. Dimensions shown are framed size; engravings (sight) are 7.5" x 11".
