About the Item
This is a 15.5" x 10.25" original woodblock print of a Japanese Showa era ukiyo-e (woodblock print) titled Mt Fuji from Mitsukubo c. 1936 by the great artist Shotei Takahashi.
Takahashi Shotei (1871–1945) was a prominent Japanese woodblock print artist associated with the shin-hanga movement. Also known by the art name Hiroaki, he gained recognition for his landscape and bird-and-flower prints. Shotei’s early career involved creating kuchi-e illustrations for literary magazines. He later collaborated with the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, contributing to the shin-hanga movement’s success by combining traditional techniques with modern themes. Shotei’s works often featured serene landscapes, charming scenes, and depictions of daily life. Despite facing challenges during World War II, he left a lasting impact on the shin-hanga genre.
