Japan, vintage Original woodblock print in antique frame. During the second half of the 17th century, a new invention of woodblock printing in Japan allowed for the printing of image in different colors. Woodblock printing henceforth came to define the national aesthetic of Japan. The name given to the style of print representing scenes of daily life and Japanese culture is ukiyo-e, which in translation approximates to “pictures of the floating world”.
