Japanese Antique Stone 19th Century Fortune Money Cat

About

From our recent Japanese Kyoto Acquisitions Japan a rare large-scale and hand carved stone Maneki Neko good fortune money cat. It dates to the late Meiji period (1868-1911). Dimensions: 9 inches tall and 6 inches wide. This comes from a Kyoto area collection. Excellent detail. A rare work of art that is challenging to find in Japan today as these larger scale signed works in stone are sought after by Japanese collectors worldwide. They seldom come to market. Hand carved. Only one. History: The Maneki-Neko- , literally -beckoning cat, - is a common Japanese figurine (lucky charm, talisman) which is often believed to bring good luck to the owner. In Modern Times, they are usually made of ceramic or plastic. Stone examples are few and far between. The figurine depicts a cat (traditionally a calico Japanese Bobtail) beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed in—often at the entrance of—shops, restaurants, pachinko parlors, and other businesses. The maneki-neko is sometimes also called the welcoming cat, lucky cat, money cat, happy cat, beckoning cat, or fortune cat in English. (Thank you to wikipedia). Lifetime guarantee of authenticity: All of our Asian works of art come with our lifetime authenticity guarantee. We are members of the North American Japanese Garden Association (NAJGA) specializing for ten years now in old and authentic Japanese stone garden ornaments.
