Japanese Embroidery Tapestry Wall Hanging Unframed Meiji Period

About the Item

A large Japanese embroidery tapestry circa 1900s end of Meiji period. The lovely panel is of a fine linen/hemp in beige color with golden hue. The embroidery work depicts an elaborate pictorial composition of flocks of red-crown cranes in a bamboo grove. Mostly done in satin stitches and supplemented with chain stitch, the delicate needlework was finely executed. The cranes, twenty-two total but clustered in group, some in flight, some on the group, are all with distinct poses, set against the background of the tall cluster of bamboo. The color pallet on this panel is rather interesting with a nearly tone on tone effect: thin silk threads in various shades of brown, beige, rose gold, burnt orange were used for the large portion of the bamboo plants as well as the artful highlight of white crane features. The red crowns on the head of the crane were executed with chain stitch. Symbolically speaking, red-crown crane was one of the most beloved birds in Japan. They are the symbol of longevity and fortune. Humble, unadorned and evergreen, bamboo symbolizes the strength and prosperity in Japanese culture. The tapestry is unframed and unlined (allowing one to see the needle threads on the back). It will make a stunning piece when framed for display.
