Royal Indian Textile Large Embroidery Velvet Metal Thread, 1800-1820
About the Item
This is a royal antique Indian embroidery velvet textile with metal threading woven during the
early 19th century circa 1800-1820 measuring 490x267 CM in size. The field design of this
textile is an allover lattice design that encloses flowers and at both ends of the textile are located
two extra-large lion motifs facing each other and in-between can be found a small size elephant
carrying a royal couple. The border is made using all-metal thread and has a floral design with
large palmettes surrounded by blossoming vines. This is an extremely rare and unique piece, and
it was woven for the royal family of India. The textile was made using a red velvet base and the
metal thread is used for the design of the textile. The textile has many different textures and
seems to have a 3D effect is because the weaver used different weaving techniques with the
metal thread. This is an extremely unique piece that was made using the most luxurious
materials and was woven using some of the most difficult weaving techniques showing that it
was woven by a master weaver and was made for important people of the time. Owning a piece
is like this is owning a part of history and it belongs in a collection or a museum.
