Vintage Handcrafted Patched Textile "Boro" in Indigo Dye, Japan, 20th Century

About the Item

Japan, Vintage Delicate handcrafted antique patched 'Boro' textile with detailed stitching. Likely used as a Furoshiki or duvet cover. 'Boro' are a class of Japanese textiles. During the Edo period, 'Boro' came to predominately signify clothing worn by the peasant farming classes, who mended their garments with spare fabric scraps out of economic necessity. In many cases, the usage of such a boro garment would be handed down over generations, eventually resembling a patchwork after decades of mending. Following the Meiji period and an increase in living standard amongst entire Japanese populace, most boro pieces signified an undesirable past poverty, and were therefore discarded by the middle class. Only a collection was preserved by folkorists. Measures: H 121 x W 119 cm
