About the Item

A beautiful large pair of nineteenth century bronze sculptural andirons of Giambologna’s masterpiece ‘Rape of the Sabine Women' (or 'Abduction of the Sabine Women'). The base is formed from two ornate supporting dragons with a central mask. Above three nude figures are depicted, a young man in the centre who is abducting a woman from an older man below him. This is based on an event that took place in early Rome. The rear log supports in wrought-iron with twist detail. Restored. In the Renaissance manner. Circa 1890
