About the Item

French Francis the First Renaissance Period cast iron andirons in the shape of courtiers with their signature caps and arms holding shields bearing fleur de lys. These truly rare andirons were created when the vagaries of casting iron were far from well understood. Wrought iron had been used for centuries, but cast iron in Europe was a fairly new process and the kinks had not been routinely worked out. Each of these andirons weighs approximately 85 pounds, as they are solid castings, with the backs being flat, not indented to save material as would happen later on. The log holders are massive, as they were meant to hold large logs (and they did). One casting came out well, but the second casting had flaws where the iron bubbled and the detailing to the base of the andiron was far from perfect. However, I believe because the maker thought that the probability of having a better casting was pretty poor, the andiron was deemed good enough to use and sell. Later on in the history of casting, the less than perfect molding would have been recycled and redone. Looking at these andirons, one sees the march of time. These were made in the very early days of casting iron in Europe, with that in mind the flaws become bonuses and definitely an interesting view of a moment in history. From their size and stature, these must have resided in an important chateau in France. A note: the last photo is included to give a sense of size compared to "normal" 18th century andirons.

Repaired: Probably in the 19th century there was a piece of heavy iron screwed under the casting of the log holder on one of the andirons as a reinforcement. It is not visible from the front. Wear consistent with age and use. The provenance of these andirons will be available to the purchaser.
