About the Item

A sculptural pair of French 19th century cast iron fireplace andirons, or chenets, that hold as much fascination as the roaring fire behind them. Stylistically they fall between the brutalism of Gothic Revival and creative expression of Art Nouveau: square “baskets” at the top of each pillar for warming emanate from thick rods equipped with scrolling spit hooks and a half-moon ornament of hammered texture that may also be functional and not simply decorative. In between the bowed front legs is a ribbon of steel pinched to whimsical arches to complement the curvaceous designs elsewhere. The hand-forged rod creating the back leg is how the burning logs are elevated; naturally the pair have developed a reddish-brown patina from oxidation of the iron and more than a century of exposure to high heat.
