About the Item

A sculptural pair of French 19th century cast iron fireplace andirons–or chenets–guardians of the hearth who draw as much attention as the roaring fire behind them. Stylistically they reference Gothic Revival and Art Nouveau verging on Deco: the stylized face of a lady at the top of each reeded pillar soars upward from cartouches decorated with scrolling motifs forming the junction of the three legs (an arch at the front and the log riser on the back). The pair reflect a reddish-brown patina from oxidation of the iron and centuries of exposure to high heat. Please view the detailed images to see more. Sold as a pair.
