About the Item

An extraordinary and exceptionally rare pair of oversized Regency bronze andirons, each measuring 38.5 inches tall × 38.5 inches deep × 22.5 inches wide and weighing well over 100 lbs apiece. Cast in heavy solid bronze with finely detailed ornament and fitted with wrought iron billet bars, these are far larger and more substantial than the standard Georgian or Regency examples that typically survive. Their sheer mass and presence elevate them beyond fireplace furniture into the realm of architectural sculpture. The bold proportions, sculptural modeling, and rich patina reflect the Regency fascination with classical grandeur and the revival of monumental design. Such pieces would have been conceived for the great halls of important English residences, where the fireplace was both a functional necessity and a symbol of hospitality and power. Unlike the more common 18th- and 19th-century andirons — generally under 30 inches and often hollow-cast — this pair approaches 40 inches in height and depth, executed in solid bronze with immense weight. Their rarity is underscored by the absence of direct comparables at Christie’s, Sotheby’s, or Bonhams, highlighting how few Regency bronzes of this scale and ambition survive. Designers of the period such as Thomas Hope, Charles Heathcote Tatham, George Bullock, and the Wyatt brothers promoted this monumental classical vocabulary, drawing inspiration from archaeological discoveries at Pompeii and Herculaneum and translating ancient Roman grandeur into English interiors. These andirons embody that same spirit — objects that blur the line between functional furnishing and architectural statement. 📏 Dimensions: 38.5 in. tall × 38.5 in. deep × 22.5 in. wide each ⚜️ Date: Regency, early 19th century 🎨 Materials: Solid cast bronze with wrought iron billet bars ⚖️ Weight: Approx. 100 lbs each (possibly more) A truly monumental pair of Regency andirons — at once functional, sculptural, and historically significant. Rare in scale, unmatched in presence, and of a quality seldom seen on the market today.
