Pair of Empire Sphinx Chimneys, Brass Andirons, Paris 19th Century Napoleon III

About the Item

Fire-gilt bronze chimneys "aux sphinges". Pedestal standing on a round base with open worked mascaron, tendrils, flowers and bows, on which lies the winged sphinx. Finely chiseled and gilded. Paris, circa 1870. Bronze sphinx patinated in black. Annotation: The representation of these chimney-goats goes back to originals of F. J. Belanger. Such pieces were also made by Thomire.
