1 of the 24 Handmade Majolica Sunflower Tiles Made in Italy
About the Item
1 of the 24 blue and white sunflower tiles. The floral tiles are handmade and hand painted in Europe, Italy.
These tiles are particularly beautiful, the biscuit is handmade and the Majolica is done by hand immersion. The result is splendid.
The Majolica technique utilizes bisque (already fired clay) that is covered with an opaque glaze-base and decorated with colors. Then, they are both fired together to vitrify at 980º C (1796º F). Firing leaves the tile with a brightly colored, glossy surface that makes it non-absorbent to water.
Nowadays, Majolica is better known as In-Glaze.
Size each tile: 9.84 inch (25 cm) height x 9.84 inch (25 cm) width x 0.39 inch (1 cm) thick
Condition is very good. It's important to keep in mind that with the Majolica method, the tile base and decoration are fired together in the kiln. It not only integrates the colors that overlap (to form other colors), but also adds to the fluidity, movement and intensity of the artisan's brush strokes.
