About the Item

This is a special lot of 45 Art Nouveau tiles depicting a continuous decor with roses. The decor is applied in tube-lining technique. Slip clay is placed in a sqeeze bulb fitted with a fine nozzle. As the bulb is squeezed, a thin line of clay is piped onto the surface of the tile, creating raised lines that contain and seperate colored glazed thatare appleid after the slib has dried. These tiles were made by the Belgium tile manufactory Gilliot & Cie, founded in 1897 by George Gilliot in Hemiksem. The factory employed 250 people in 1904 and about 900 in 1913. It was one of the largest producers of tiles in europe, exporting to large parts of the world. As a last image Planche 127, from a sales brochure of this factory, to be dated around 1905. These tiles are depicted on the brochure, indicated by an arrow. These tiles are ideal for a special project such as a border in the kitchen or bathroom or as a border around a fireplace. All tiles are 6"square (15.2 x 15.2 cm). The condition of the tiles is excellent, I took great care to clean them as the tiles came from an Art Nouveau building that was demolished. There are some imperfections in the glaze, but that occurred during production. The back of the tile is marked with an H, this is a reference to the location of the factory, Hemixem.
