17th Century Carved Walnut Wood Plaque from France

About the Item

This is a wonderful religious bas relief plaque from France, dating to the 1600's. More recently, the plaque was "cleaned" or "stripped", which gives it this nice, pale blonde walnut color. The plaque has quite a bit of symbolism, and from what we can gather, it represents St. Eligius, John the Evangelist, and St. Catherine of Alexandria. There are stylized clouds represented as circles in the sky and they all stand on knolls of sparse grass. The piece is solid walnut wood and the relief has been carved out of the wood. St. Eligius, was the patron saint of goldsmiths, and patron saint of horses and those who work with them. Born, 588 and died in 660. He is often portrayed as a Bishop with a crozier in his right hand and an anvil in his left. Eligius was chief counselor to Dagobert I, Merovingian King of France. After the King’s death in 642, he was appointed the Bishop of Noyon-Tournai. Over a period of 15 years, Eligius worked tirelessly to convert the pagan population of Flanders to Christianity. John the Evangelist/Apostle is depicted here with the chalice in his right hand and a book held to his heart in his left hand. The Chalice, which is symbolic of St. John, is sometimes interpreted with reference to the Last Supper. John alone among all apostles was at the foot of Christ on the Cross. Catherine of Alexandria is depicted here standing next to a wheel on which she was martyred, and carrying a sword of martyrdom. Her left hand is held to her heart. Eleven hundred years later, St. Joan of Arc identified Catherine as one of the Saints who appeared to her and counseled her.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Old restorations, losses to wood and motifs in areas, rubs, nicks and traces of old woodworm, and age separations ,all commensurate with the age of the 17th Century. Slight bow or warp to upper section.
