About the Item

Large Pair of 19th C. Carved Mahogany Heraldic Winged Griffins, Attributed to the workshop of R.J. Horner & Co. Presenting an exceptionally large pair of 19th-century carved mahogany heraldic winged Griffins, attributed to the renowned workshop of R.J. Horner & Co. Known for their masterful craftsmanship and intricate detailing, Horner's workshop produced some of the most exquisite furniture and architectural elements in American design history. Founded in 1886 by Robert J. Horner in New York City, R.J. Horner & Co. gained acclaim for creating luxurious pieces featuring elaborate carvings in fine woods like mahogany and oak. The company's showroom, located at 61-65 West 23rd Street in lower Manhattan, was a hub of refined taste. In 1915, Horner retired after merging with George C. Flint to form Horner and Flint. Each Griffin, in this pair, is fantastically carved in a recumbent position, resting on high-relief wings and powerful legs while proudly holding a heraldic shield. These majestic sculptures measure 24 inches high, 9 inches wide, and 19 inches deep. They serve as remarkable architectural elements or standalone works of art, ready to enhance any fine collection or elevate an interior space with their grandeur and historical significance.
