About the Item

Large Wrought-Iron Art Deco Console, attributed to R.Subes, circa 1930 Impressive and elegant French Mid-Century 1930 modernist / late Art Deco wrought-iron console Attributed to Raymond Subes. The console is emblematic of Subes's use of soft, curving, sensuous forms and an effortless sense of balance and harmony. The wall console is hand-crafted and hand-hammered into a perfect, delicate form, ornated by gilt patinated elements on the mounts typically “Subes”. Resting on a characteristic Art Deco Black Portor Marble Base as well as the marble top. Circa 1930 H 96 cm L 235 cm P 38 cm Additional References: Edgar Brandt, Gilbert Poillerat, Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Jacques Adnet, Jacques Quinet, Andre Arbus. Raymond Subes was born in 1891 and died in 1970. It is one of the most important French art ironers of the twentieth century. He attended the courses of the École Boulle in chisel, then those of the School of Decorative Arts with Charles Genuys. In 1911, he worked for three years in the workshop of the ironmonger d'art Émile Robert, where he acquired a great deal of technical experience, and succeeded him as artistic director of the workshops Borderel and Robert in 1919, rue Damrémont in Paris 18th (Borderel is a metal carpentry company). Raymond Subes will be the CEO of the Borert company (by contraction of "Borderel" and "Robert"). In his work, Raymond Subes combines traditional forging with modern methods. His design of ironwork is based on two main ideas: the architectural function of wrought iron and its functional use. He did not hesitate to use several materials simultaneously: first wrought iron, sometimes bronze and copper, in the 1930s added aluminum, oxidized steel and lacquered steel. At the 1925 exhibition, apart from iron works such as grilles or ramps, he presented, with Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, in the context of the Collector’s Hall, a metal library with stamped and lacquered sheet surfaces. Raymond Subes is commissioned to carry out major State-level work on the transatlantic liners Île-de-France in 1927, Atlantique in 1931, Liberté in 1950, Normandie in 1962 and finally for France in 1962. He worked for the Bank of France on the Champs-Élysées, for the Pasteur Institute, the Caisse des dépôts et consignations and the Musée de la France d'outre-mer, porte Dorée in Paris 12th in 1931. In collaboration with Porteneuve, he produces chrome-plated metal furniture and participates in the metallic construction of certain bridges. It is also worth mentioning the iron-work of the church of Saint-Louis de Vincennes (1912-1927, Jacques Droz and Joseph Marrast architects), the grilles of the church of Saint-Pierre in Roye (Somme, 1931-1933, reconstruction by Charles Duval and Emmanuel Gonse), the gates of the baptistery of Saint-Jean-Bosco church, Paris 20th (1933-1937, Rotter architect), the cross crowning the bell tower of Saint-Louis church in Villemomble (1926, Paul Tournon architect) and the gate of the en-trance to Sainte-Thérèse church in Elisabethville (1927-1928, Paul Tournon architect).A former student of the École Boulle and the École nationale supérieure des arts decoratifs, Raymond Subes is one of the most famous French ironworkers of the Art Deco period. Throughout his career, he worked in the firm of Émile Robert, who was associated with Ernest Borderel, until 1970. He was first designer, then artistic director and finally general director. In the sixties, the workshops Borderel and Robert must leave Paris and are installed in Saint-Denis. Raymond Subes replaces the workshop on rue Damrémont with a building, and creates the Borert real estate SA. The Saint-Denis factory went bankrupt after his death.
