Pair of Antique Cast Iron Bollards from La Ciotat, France, Circa 1900

About the Item

Bollards in their original form were short posts along a wharf’s edge designed to secure boats. Eventually, bollards were adapted for use along roadways, serving as methods of controlling traffic and protecting pedestrians. Our pair of cast iron bollards fit the latter definition, but in typical French fashion, great thought and detail have gone into creating an otherwise ordinary city or port feature. Originally installed on a street in La Ciotat, France, circa 1900, the bollards were cast in the style of Napoleon III by Gillet 81 Castes, which was founded in 1848. Each of our bollards has a spherical finial that sits on a circular plate. At the bottom of the plate is a pair of eyelets that would have been used to string bollards together (although the eyelets are missing from one of ours). The necks beneath have quarter round edges adorned with a geometric pattern. The bodies of the bollards thicken as they approach circular bases. Each body has four segments, separated by thick borders. At the base of one segment on each bollard is a raised heraldic shield representing the city of La Ciotat. The coat of arms is emblazoned with a castle with three open gates. At the top is a bishop’s crosier underneath an open crown, while a sardine (representing La Ciotat’s maritime activities) floats in water beneath the castle. These cast iron bollards from La Ciotat would make fantastic architecturals. They could be used as mooring posts on the dock at a lakehouse or they could also be placed on either side of a driveway of walkway.
