Pair of Antique French Terra Cotta Finial Elements, Circa 1885

About the Item

Recently discovered at a property in the outskirts of Paris where they were used as garden ornaments (they were most likely originally part of larger garden urns or an architectural installation), this pair of terra cotta finial elements date to circa 1885. The finely crafted finials boast intricate detailing, featuring ornate foliate and floral rinceaux motifs that gracefully wrap around their bulbous main bodies. Adding a regal touch, a pair of lion mascarons, each placed on opposing sides, are nestled within scrolled consoles. Both spheres are topped with a curled leaf cup embracing a thick roundel, culminating in a stack of roundels as the final flourish. The original beige finish has a fantastic patina, with hints of cream, black, and green. These finials not only stand as captivating decorative pieces for a garden or courtyard, but they also offer the opportunity for creative repurposing as unique lamps.
