A Pair of Japanese Shishi Lion Architectural Elements
About the Item
One is portrayed with its mouth closed, and is known as a Koma-inu (Korean dog). The other, with its mouth open, is known as a Kara-shishi (Chinese lion). And in fact, they have characteristics of both dogs and lions, with long floppy, ears, and curled, flowing manes.
Each carved from solid Japanese cypress, they have weathered beautifully, the elements having exposed the deep and powerful grain of the wood.
