Pair of Large Sicilian 17th Century Painted & Parcel-Gilt Church Altar Ornaments

About the Item

A wonderful pair of large carved Sicilian painted and guilt church altar ornaments from 1643-1715 in the Louis XIV style. Each measures: 21.25 inches high. The base is 7.5 inches wide and 7.8 inches deep. The use of these objects took place in the ecclesiastical sphere. As they were used in a church altar, the backs were never seen. Therefore, they are only lacquered and gilded on the front. Item located in Italy. Visible signs of aging including small holes from past wood worms. The candelabra have been treated to insure there is no issue with wood worms.

Although it was an element used in architecture before, the Solomon column is a more known and habitual piece in the Baroque, especially since its use by Bernini in the canopy of St. Peter's Vatican (completed in 1633).
