Italian Period Louis XV Two-Winged Chapel Gate in Carved Walnut

About the Item

Carved Wooden Gate Of The 1700s By Bottega Lombarda With Two Doors from a church altar carved and pierced with floral motifs with pomegranates and sunflowers. Rare Lombard balustrade gate consisting of two wings with molded frames and central mirrors carved with fretwork, phytomorphic motifs and zoomorphs. In the lower part two birds hold a crown, which has been integrated into the right wing; in the upper part the gate is adorned with a floral selvedge. The interrupted frames, the one on the sash right has been replaced, show that originally the gate went against a balustrade or similar structure. The symbolic meanings of the crown, pomegranate, and sunflower are interesting. In the back are delightful shaped wooden selvedge supports. Also original are the kneeling dovetail hinges. In good condition this gate is from a private collection in Lombardy and dates from the 18th century. The 1700s carved wooden gate from a Lombard workshop is a piece of furniture of great historical and artistic value. These gates, typical of the architecture of the period, feature high-quality craftsmanship and intricate decorative workmanship. The Lombard workshop, renowned for its woodworking skills, created unique works, often embellished with floral motifs, mythological figures, and ornamental details reflecting the Baroque and Rococo styles. Such a gate can be made of solid wood, such as walnut or oak, and features finishes ranging from natural varnish to wax, to preserve its beauty over time. In addition, the carved gates of the 1700s not only served a decorative function, but also a symbolic one, often representing the prestige of the owning family. This rare chapel gate, thanks to the fine fretwork carving. can be used as a room divider, inserted into a wooden balustrade or a wall, in a niche instead of a grate. If you have a furniture sought after and you are looking for a protective barrier, an elegant safety gate for children or pets, by inserting this antique carved and pierced wooden decorative element, you will solve your need with a unique and exclusive architectural complement.
