Odyssey Large Headrest White by Eugeni Quitllet for BD Barcelona, 2022

About the Item

Odyssey Large Headrest by Eugeni Quitllet for BD Barcelona, 2022 A strong presence with pristine comfort. Inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, Eugeni Quitllet’s Odyssey armchair recalls a retro-futurism that gazes towards the stars. Drawing from his creative idiosyncrasies, Quitllet merges Kubrick’s visual language with the soft luxury of smooth curves, a carved seat and a comfortable ergonomic shape. Available in multiple finishes, the Odyssey is adaptable, allowing a sitter to swivel and rock or lean back into two headrest options. It fits diverse needs and balances function and an astral form. The Odyssey’s curves envelop the sitter, and its components almost float together, locking into an organic body that could fit in a home as much as a starship. Eugeni Quitllet was born in Ibiza in 1972. He moved to Barcelona after studying at Art School in the Balearic Islands and obtaining a Design and Interior Design diploma. Quitllet then met Philippe Stark and began working at his agency in Paris. Ten years later, after creating some of the most exciting designs of the early ‘00s, he opened his agency in Barcelona. His vision and future-forward designs are sleek and unique. He is now based in Dallas, where he continues using today's manufacturing to create his designs for tomorrow About the manufacturer: BD has been around for over half a century. It was founded in a nightclub in 1972 by a bunch of young architects and designers from Barcelona. They broke into the design world with a new vision: to produce and market their designs, and the designs of their friends with complete creative freedom and design criteria. Beginning with the designs of contemporaries like Ettore Sottsass, Rennie Mackintosh and Álvaro Siza, BD provoked a curiosity about design. These early pieces helped bring international recognition to the country’s design scene, and many of them still exist today. They are an international design company run by a collective ownership —Apartamento Magazine (Nacho Alegre, Omar Sosa, Marco Velardi), Taller Bofill (Pablo Bofill, Ricardo Bofill, Luna Paiva, Hernán Cortés, Fernando de la Mata), and Igor Urdampilleta from Arquitectura-G— all architects, publishers and designers. Along with one of the founders, Oscar Tusquets, this group fosters the same nonconformist spirit BD has had since its beginnings. Their independence as a company fuels their intentions and supports this purpose. BD are now expanding their design dialogue to delve into diverse realms of creativity, in design and in everything they do.

Varius by Oscar Tusquets for BD Barcelona, 2022 The chair played yesterday and will play into tomorrow. Like a tuned Violin, Stradivarius. Its critical acclaim and commercial success kickstarted a new era of contemporary Spanish design. Loved for decades, the design is considered and remarkably adaptable. Stackable. Strong. Lasting. It stayed in tune. Based on the Stradivarius Violin but built to fit everywhere. This chair was brought back for its new finishes and styles. It is staying because it has a character of its own, now fit for every floor. The Varius plays again. Born in Barcelona in 1941, Oscar Tusquets graduated as an architect in 1965 from Barcelona’s Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura and was a member of Studi Per, together with Pep Bonet, Cristian Cirici, Lluís Clotet, and Mireia Riera. In 1972, they founded BD together, and Tusquets set about designing furniture and other objects, which would be recognised by the Spanish National Design Award. A number of his pieces appear in renowned museum collections, such as the MoMA in New York and the Centre George Pompidou in Paris. He has also been honoured with the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts), the insignia of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of the Arts and Letters) and the Creu de Sant Jordi (Cross of Sant Jordi). Since the ‘90s, he has published books on a wide range of design-related topics. About the manufacturer: BD has been around for over half a century. Bridges Large Green by Muller Van Severen for BD Barcelona
By Muller Van Severen
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Bridges Large by Muller Van Severen for BD Barcelona Bridges is a collection of cabinets designed by Muller Van Severen. MVS developed the cabinets from their series of ‘Wave’ vases. The vase silhouettes were brought into handmade cabinets with unique cutout bases that transcend function. Their refined colours and glossy finishes emphasise structure, standing out with a sculptural beauty. Alone or as a whole, the Bridges cabinets create a colourful architecture that is vibrant and spacious and, of course, full of personality. Materials: Containers, shelves and doors are made of MDF and gloss lacquered in four different colors; NCS 3060-B90G (Green), NCS 3560-Y80R (Red), NCS 7020-R80B (Blue), NCS 8010-R10B (Aubergine). The interiors are always laquered in matt finish. 5mm glass top painted in the same color of the cabinet is optional. Back part ofthe cabinet painted in matte is optional. Regulation glides are included in order to fit the different floors. The doors have steel hiden hinges finished in titanium, installed with an automatic pulse opening spring system. In addition this large option had and extra accesory: the coat bar for clothes. They are both artists, and their work showcases their appreciation of the natural beauty of materials and how materials can speak for themselves. Working between design and art, the couple has always been on an inspired quest for sculpturally interesting design objects and furniture. Their creations are globally identified in both private homes and public spaces. All of Muller Van Severens own production pieces are handmade by small-scale fabricators and skilled artisans, with an honesty to the rawness and irregularity of the chosen material. Their work is characterized by careful research into their shared passion for art, architecture and materials, yet their designs appear to be created almost intuitively and with total effortlessness.
