About the Item

This double door, based on a drawing by Albert Rateau, is a model very similar to the entrance of the Pavillon de l’Élégance at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris in 1925, a founding event in the history of Art Deco. The Pavillon de l’Élégance was built by architect Robert Fournez to house the creations of four fashion houses: Callot, Jenny, Lanvin, and Worth. The interior decoration was commissioned from Armand-Albert Rateau, and the Baguès house was tasked with designing the ironwork and lighting fixtures. The entrance door was "closed by wrought iron gates very finely worked, designed by Rateau." This door was a resounding success: in addition to photographs, it was reproduced in several articles and books, including the Gazette du Bon Ton no. 7 of the year 1924-1925, Henri Clouzot’s La Ferronnerie Moderne, and La Renaissance de l’art français et des industries de luxe. Through these means, it inspired and led to reinterpretations such as ours. The decorator Armand-Albert Rateau (1882-1938) trained at the École Boulle before beginning his career with decorator Georges Hoentschel. At the young age of 23, he was the artistic director of Alavoine et Compagnie, one of the most important decoration companies of the time, before setting up on his own. He participated in the 1900 Universal Exhibition and the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts. Entire decors of his creation, executed for the fashion designer Jeanne Lanvin, with whom he collaborated multiple times, are preserved at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The Baguès house was founded in 1840 in Auvergne by Noël Baguès. The company specialized in the creation and manufacture of liturgical bronzes, then lighting bronzes. In the 1920s, Baguès created its own fine ironwork models: the entrance gate of the Pavillon de l’Élégance is a beautiful testimony to this. Our double door features an Art Deco decoration very close to this door. Stylized palm trees overlap from the base to the top of each leaf and are joined on the lintel. Their branches have a beautiful silver-white hue bordered with gold, and the top of each palm tree consists of an oval sculpted in low relief in purely Art Deco forms. On either side, steps rhythm the ascent. The patterns stand out against a glass surface, allowing the space to be closed without harming the transparency effect of the voids that highlight the decor. On either side, the uprights are adorned with geometric shapes playing on the alternation between solids and voids, between hammered metal squares on the edges and tall rectangles revealing the glass lining. The handle blends perfectly into the decor: its shape echoes one of the palm branches, thinning and curling in on itself at the end. Detail of one of the palm trees on the lintel ©GalerieMarcMaison
