About the Item

Bertil Vallien is a Swedish artist and designer. He studied ceramic design at Konstfack (the University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Sweden) and studied under Stig Lindberg, who was a teacher there. During his studies, he worked as an intern for Erik Höglund at Boda and designed products at Åfors. After graduating with top honours, he spent three years in the United States working as a designer at Hal Framholdt Ceramics while also holding solo exhibitions and presenting his innovative ceramic works, which were well received. In 1963, he returned to Sweden and joined Åfors as a designer. As a leading designer of his generation, he created numerous glass products and explored new decorative techniques such as sandblasting, leaving behind a significant body of sculptural artworks that have shaped the company's legacy. He also contributed ceramic works as a guest designer for Gustavsberg and Rörstrand. This is a bird-shaped doorbell designed in 1965, manufactured by Boda Smide, the wrought iron division of Boda, with which Åfors had a partnership at the time. The bird's legs serve as supports, and when the knob on its head is turned, the bell inside its wings rings. ※There is some rust and wear due to age, but it is in good condition with no noticeable damage.
