Hobbs & Co. - Antique heavy Victorian Padlock

About the Item

The Hobbs & Co. Victorian heavy iron padlock with its original key is a remarkable piece of history and craftsmanship. This antique lock, measuring 9.2 cm x 6.3 cm x 2.5 cm and weighing 686 grams, represents the ingenuity of its time. Comes with 2 original keys. The story behind this lock traces back to Alfred Charles Hobbs, an enterprising individual born in Boston in 1812. In 1840, he became a salesperson for Jones & Newell, one of America’s leading lock manufacturers. Hobbs gained international recognition during the 1851 Great Exhibition in London when he successfully picked both a Bramah lock and the famous Chubb detector lock, astounding spectators. In the wake of his newfound fame, Hobbs established Hobbs & Co. in London. The company underwent several transformations, eventually becoming Hobbs, Ashley & Co in 1855, Hobbs, Ashley & Fortescue, and finally Hobbs, Hart & Co in 1860, headquartered in Cheapside, London. Hobbs & Co. achieved significant success due to their advanced machine production methods, becoming a prominent name in the lock industry. In 1860, after the passing of his partner Ashley, Hobbs returned to America, selling the thriving business to John Mathias Hart while retaining a beneficial interest in it. He revisited England in 1872 to celebrate the firm's 21st anniversary, showcasing his enduring connection with the company. Alfred Hobbs' legacy lives on through this Victorian heavy iron padlock, a testament to his expertise and the innovative spirit of the time. This lock not only represents superb craftsmanship but also carries the fascinating history of one of the pioneers in the lock industry, making it a prized collectible for enthusiasts and historians alike. The original red paint is chipped and distressed, adding to the authentic vintage nature of this pair of salvaged exterior doors. The aged paint may easily be stripped, taking the doors back to the raw wood which will also create a powerful impression with their sheer size and heft. This rare set of extremely large doors is part of a remarkable collection currently in our inventory; see other door listings for additional options while available. In the country side of 19th century Hungary, wealthy farmers had agricultural fields outside the villages but also had a large house in town. These houses often represented the wealth of the family. Their "house in town" would have a granary next to it as they needed to carry agricultural goods by large wagons from the countryside into the village. The doors and gates had to be very tall and wide to accommodate the large wagons, which is how this set of doors (just under 10' tall) was originally used.
