About the Item

The story behind this lock traces back to Alfred Charles Hobbs, an enterprising individual born in Boston in 1812. In 1840, he became a salesperson for Jones & Newell, one of America’s leading lock manufacturers. Hobbs gained international recognition during the 1851 Great Exhibition in London when he successfully picked both a Bramah lock and the famous Chubb detector lock, astounding spectators. In the wake of his newfound fame, Hobbs established Hobbs & Co. in London. The company underwent several transformations, eventually becoming Hobbs, Ashley & Co in 1855, Hobbs, Ashley & Fortescue, and finally Hobbs, Hart & Co in 1860, headquartered in Cheapside, London. Hobbs & Co. achieved significant success due to their advanced machine production methods, becoming a prominent name in the lock industry. In 1860, after the passing of his partner Ashley, Hobbs returned to America, selling the thriving business to John Mathias Hart while retaining a beneficial interest in it. He revisited England in 1872 to celebrate the firm's 21st anniversary, showcasing his enduring connection with the company. Alfred Hobbs' legacy lives on through this Victorian heavy iron padlock, a testament to his expertise and the innovative spirit of the time.
