About the Item

This beautifully crafted gate from California artist Mark Oldland is made from 33 uniquely curving aluminium panels, or louvers, that overlap each other at an angle to provide only a very limited view through the gate. Four vertical posts and three horizontal supports run along the back of the gate, with additional decorative louvers placed over the vertical posts to blend the back view with the front. The vertical panels range in height from 55-64" to create a softly undulating line across the top that mimics the silhouette of rolling hills, and they vary in width from 5-12" across. Oldland cut small circles into the panels in a few key places to create an additional play on light and shadows. The aluminium is blasted with fine sand (#60 as opposed to the more common #30) to create a less reflective surface with cloud-like pattern variations, and was finished with a matte sealer to protect and slightly darken the metal. The overall gate is 18'-6" long, and the stationary panels at each end are each about 5'-9" wide. The centre of the gate has a 7' wide opening, divided between two doors that swing inward toward the front side of the gate. The doors open well past 90 degrees but do not rest flat against the fixed panels on each side. The images show the gate in various positions, with both doors closed, one door open, and both doors open, from both the front and the back side. Each door has a stainless steel, T-shaped anchor that can be dropped into coordinating holes in the ground below to keep the gate open or closed. Small hardware on the back of the gate can also hold these anchors up and out of the way when opening or closing the doors, or when you do not want to lock the doors in any one position. There is a third T-shaped anchor placed higher up on the panels between the two doors that allows you to lock the doors in the closed position if desired. The louvered overlap construction conceals both the divide between the doors and the gap in framing across the back. Mark Oldland creates wonderfully creative and playful functional art pieces, including benches, tables, chairs, gates, and fountains. With an Art Nouveau-inspired style, the natural curves found in flora and fauna are emphasized and abstracted into dreamy, quirky forms and patterns.
