Pair of 19th Century French Gothic Style Doors in Carved Pine

About the Item

This pair of carved antique doors was recently found in Normandy, France. They were made during the 1800s in pine and feature rich yet restrained carvings in the French Gothic style. The panels include arcading and trefoils inside quarter round moldings. Along the bottom panels are carved linen folds, typical of Gothic furnishings. The backs of the doors remain simple, only showing the backs of the panels and old iron hardware. Light traces of the original finish (possibly gesso) can be seen in the carvings. Original iron door handles and a pull on the left door remain intact. Today, these doors would make a fantastic entry to a wine room, study, or game room. They would also be used as doors to a built-in.

    Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-carved in Belgium, circa 1860, this 11 foot tall pair of doors (132.88 inches) were recently salvaged from a Belgian chapel. They can be considered of the Gothic style, which is sometimes referred to as “pointed architecture”, because of the prevalence of pointed arches in buildings. Each door is composed of six vertical planks constructed with mortise and tenon joinery. All planks have been adorned with iron pyramid protuberances, placed in a repeating pattern. The planks and iron retain their white paint, now naturally weathered over the years, perfect for those who appreciate original condition. At over 11 feet tall, these 19th century chapel doors...

Truly a one-of-a-kind set of architecturals, these French doors feature a lovely capriccio oil painting on one side and a lacquered Chinoiserie on the verso. Dating to the 1800s, the wood frames on the front side of the doors (as seen in the main photo) have been painted true white more recently. Raised layers of molding surround a large landscape painting of ochre, brown, and gold. A protruding cornice of rounded molding adorns the frames just below the canvas, above a carved rectangular molding and raised kickplate. The capriccio (a capriccio is an architectural fantasy painting) depicts a massive, bifurcated round staircase surrounding a large outdoor fountain...
