About the Item

These magnificent lacquered doors in wood and papier-mâché were produced in Persia toward the end of the 19th century. Qajar art flourished between 1786 and 1925, a relatively stable period in the country, notably marked by strong Western influence in the arts. By the late 19th century, Qajar artists favored increasingly detailed representations and the use of subtle color gradations. At this time, the production of lacquered papier-mâché decorative objects reached a very high level of craftsmanship. Each of these doors features a tall central panel flanked by two smaller panels above and below. The painted scenes primarily depict rituals involving the use of oriental lamps, as well as equestrian hunting scenes featuring Persian lions and gazelles as prey. The entire surface is enriched with decorative friezes of flowers and birds. A similar set of doors, with the same frieze motifs and slightly different scenes, was sold at auction by Pousse-Cornet in 2022. Other comparable doors can be found in museum collections, such as a pair of Qajar doors held by the Victoria & Albert Museum.
