Victorian Wrought Iron English Pedestrian Gate

About the Item

Victorian wrought iron English pedestrian gate dating back to circa 1870. This would suit the front of a country house or period property. Its distressed finish works well with the soft diamond shaped spikes and three large round spheres in its centre, giving it a rustic look. With original hinges and part of its scroll latch still in place, it still alludes to the sturdy craftsmanship of the 19th century blacksmith. Wrought Iron Gates Gates and ironwork made from wrought iron have stood the test of time. This traditional method of craftsmanship sees the metal heated to a high temperature and then hammered into shape by a blacksmith’s hand, creating a robust and durable finish. The more wrought iron is worked, the stronger it becomes, making some of the most ornate antique gates some of the strongest. Large scale commercial production of wrought iron products ended in the mid 1970s due to the expensive and time-consuming nature of blacksmithing, making wrought iron gates true antiques, showcasing talented craftsmanship of the past.
