About the Item

These antique French “chenets” are from the 1700s and have been hand-wrought in iron. Their uppermost portions were crafted to hold cups or bowls of liquid which would then be heated from the fire behind. The hooks attached to the front of the andirons were for placement of iron horizontal bars. Pots with handles having hooks on them would be hung from these bars for cooking or roasting. Logs would be placed horizontally across the extended back legs, giving the fire room to breathe. Note, the slightly different heights and scale of the motifs, which was common in this style of French “art du feu” andirons as they were used in rustic French countryside kitchen fireplaces. Beautifully worn from centuries of use, these relatively small French cooking andirons will add an element of authenticity and history to any fireplace.

Rising a few inches above is a third light source with an identical bobeche and capital that extends from the central column.
