19th - 20th Century French 'The Cobbler and the Financier' Fireback / Backsplash
About the Item
Late 19th or early 20th Century French Napoleon III period fireback.
The fable of the cobbler and the financier (Jean de la Fontaine 1621-1695). A financier's troubled rest is interrupted by the merry singing of a cobbler. The financier interviews the workman about his business and offers him a gift of a hundred crowns to guard against a rainy day. Worry over the security of new money destroys the cobbler's own rest and allows the financier a period of unbroken repose. Finally the cobbler brings back the money and demands the return of his songs and his sleep.
The fireback is made of cast iron and has a brown patina. Upon request it can be made black / pewter at no extra costs.
