About the Item

A Fine 19th-Century Dutch 'Doofpot' (Ember Pot) A truly exceptional piece of Dutch domestic history, this 'doofpot' or ember pot is a remarkable example. Crafted in the Netherlands, this unique vessel was a practical and essential part of daily life, used to safely extinguish and store smouldering embers from the hearth, thereby saving them to easily rekindle a fire the next morning. The doofpot is a striking study in contrasting materials and functional design. Its robust, tapering body is expertly fashioned from hand-beaten copper, a material chosen for its excellent heat-resistant properties. The copper's surface has developed a magnificent, warm patination over time, speaking to its authentic and storied history. This rich, earthy tone is beautifully complemented by the polished brass of the lid, handles, and feet, which have been polished to a brilliant shine. The lid is a perfect example of purpose-driven design: a heavy, seamless brass dome topped with a turned finial. When placed firmly on the rim, it would have created an airtight seal, starving the embers of oxygen and extinguishing them safely. The sturdy, riveted ring handles and three small brass feet complete the form, lending it both stability and a refined decorative air. More than a simple household item, this doofpot is a rare piece of social history, a tangible link to a time when domestic efficiency and resourcefulness were paramount. Its superb craftsmanship and elegant form transcend its original utilitarian function, making it a compelling sculptural object for a contemporary interior. It is an excellent example of a beautiful, authentic antique that tells a unique and fascinating story. Condition Report This doofpot is in very good antique condition. Its honest wear and beautiful patina are a key part of its appeal, confirming its authenticity and history. It is a stable and ready-to-display piece of both functional and decorative art. Brass Arts And Crafts Jardiniere By Henry Loveridge & Co.
By Henry Loveridge & Co.
Located in Lincoln, GB
Brass Arts and Crafts Jardiniere by Henry Loveridge is a truly remarkable piece that showcases both exquisite design and exceptional craftsmanship. This heavy quality jardiniere, which may have originally served as a coal helmet, stands elegantly on three shapely legs, adding a touch of sophistication to any space. The chunky ring handles not only provide practicality but also contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal of the piece. Adorned with a bold band of roundels around the top, this jardiniere exudes a sense of grandeur and timeless beauty. Stamped underneath, this jardiniere is a testament to the attention to detail and superior quality that Henry Loveridge is renowned for. The company, which originated in 1840, quickly established itself as one of the largest japanners in the country during the 19th century. Initially specializing in japanware made from papier mache and tin, Loveridge's adapted to the changing market by expanding into copper and brassware as the demand for japanning declined. Unfortunately, no records or catalogs from the company have been discovered, making it necessary to rely on archaeological findings to piece together the history of Loveridge's. While it is unclear whether all of Loveridge's products were marked with a maker's mark, it is likely that only a fraction of their mass-produced items were labeled. Prior to the late 19th century, it was uncommon for trade or other marks to be placed on such items. However, a few japanned pieces and a cast iron cooking pot...
