About the Item
19th Century Dutch fireback depicting a religious theme about David's punishment.
David ordered a census of Israel and Judah, which displeased God because it reflected David’s pride and lack of trust. After realizing his sin, David was given a choice by the prophet Gad: seven years of famine, three months of fleeing from enemies, or three days of plague. David chose to fall into God’s hands, and a devastating plague struck the land, killing 70,000 people. As the angel of destruction approached Jerusalem, God had compassion and stopped the plague at the threshing floor of Araunah. David built an altar there, offered sacrifices, and God answered with fire from heaven, halting the disaster.
The fireback is made of cast iron and has a brown patina. Upon request it can be made black / pewter color with stove polish at no extra cost. The condition of the fireback is good and it is fit for use in the fireplace or as a backsplash.
