19th Century French 'Bocca della Verità' Fireback / Backsplash
About the Item
19th century French Napoleon III fireback with the Bocca della Verità or Mouth of Truth. It is a sculpture representing the God of Sea outside a church in Rome. The mouth is said to bite the hand of anyone who lies. Legend goes that it is designed to test the faithfulness of women.
The fireback is made of cast iron and has a natural brown patina. Upon request it can be made black / pewter. The fireback is in a good condition and does not have cracks.
